Josef Reither (June 26, 1880 - April 30, 1950)
Josef Reither
Josef Reither, a farmer’s son, advocated the interests of the Austrian working class and farmers, which put him in opposition to National Socialism. In 1934-35 he was Austrian minister of agriculture and forests. He was a member of the Council of the Austrian States and of the Austrian Parliament from October 1935 until March 12, 1938, the day of the “Anschluss” (annexation), when German troops invaded Austria. The day afterwards, Reither was arrested and deported to Dachau concentration camp; he was released in July 1941. For the planned coup in July 1944 he was designated as political commissioner and adviser to the liaison officers and commanders in military district XVII (Vienna). On July 22, 1944, two days after the unsuccessful assassination attempt on Hitler, Reither was arrested in Vienna. He was deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp and later brought to Berlin, where he survived until the end of the war in the Gestapo prison in Lehrter Straße. Josef Reither returned to Austria in the summer of 1945.
