Eberhard von Breitenbuch
July 20, 1910 - September 21, 1980Cavalry Captain Eberhard von Breitenbuch came from the longstanding Thuringian aristocratic von Breitenbuch family and was the son of the royal Prussian court official and forester Arthur von Breitenbuch and Clementine Freiin von Münchhausen. Breitenbuch studied forestry in Tharandt and trained as a reserve officer. At the beginning of the war he was adopted into the Wehrmacht as an active officer. Initially, Breitenbuch served as a second lieutenant and batman to Colonel General Erwin von Witzleben, later becoming a cavalry captain. He came into the circle of conspirators through close contact with Henning von Tresckow. He intended to shoot Hitler on March 11, 1944, during a briefing at Obersalzberg. The attempt failed but Breitenbuch went undiscovered. He was transferred a number of times and was on the front on July 20, 1944. Even under torture, arrested fellow conspirators such as Fabian von Schlabrendorff did not betray Breitenbuch.
