General Information

The German Resistance Memorial Center offers free seminars for groups to add greater depth to a visit to its exhibition. Moderated by freelance associates of the German Resistance Memorial Center, these seminars use biographies to illuminate people's motives, goals, and actions in resistance to National Socialism. The visitors work on their own in the permanent exhibition.

You can choose between half-day seminars, full-day seminars, and seminars lasting several days. It is best to allow three hours as a minimum when planning your seminar. The number of participants should not exceed 20 persons. Larger classes or groups will be split up and may work on different topics if desired.

The following topics are available:

  1. Resistance from the Labor Movement
  2. Resisting on the Basis of Christian Beliefs
  3. Resisting in the Arts and Sciences
  4. Exile and Resistance
  5. Developments Leading to July 20, 1944
  6. Stauffenberg and the Assassination Attempt of July 20, 1944
  7. The Kreisau Circle
  8. The White Rose
  9. The "Red Orchestra"
  10. Youth Opposition
  11. Resistance by Jews
  12. Women in the Resistance
  13. Formation of Different Groups in the Resistance
  14. Motives for Resistance
  15. Resistance in Daily Life During the War
Other subjects from the 26 topics of the permanent exhibition Resistance to National Socialism may be offered, but are subject to prior arrangement upon registration. Please register at least four weeks in advance.

Typical Schedule for a Half-Day Seminar:
Following an introduction to the respective topic of the exhibition (30 minutes), the participants form small groups. These groups study representative biographies (45 minutes) with the aid of pictures and documents in the exhibition and examine the freedom of action they had and the means available to them within the confines of a dictatorship. After a short break (15 minutes), the groups present their results to the whole group and discuss them (45 minutes). A short film (30 minutes) adds greater depth to the topic before the final discussion (15 minutes). This schedule can be altered at any time as required.
