The sixteen-year-old Sinti Berta Georges (shown here in 1947/48) lived in a children’s home for girls near Schorndorf. Her parents and nine brothers and sisters had been deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp in 1943. When the SS made several attempts to collect Berta Georges for deportation, the home director Gotthilf Fritz refused to hand her over. Because of his actions, Berta Georges survived the National Socialist persecution.
