Shoes, Bread … Living on in Auschwitz

An Exhibition of the International Auschwitz Committee in Cooperation with the German Resistance Memorial Center, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum (Poland) and the International Youth Meeting Centre Oświęcim/Auschwitz (Poland)

The exhibition presents memories, experiences, and impressions of Auschwitz survivors on their lives in the camp, as they related them in conversation with young trainees at Volkswagen Coaching GmbH. Alex Deutsch, Saarbrücken, told the group: "The wooden shoes were a death sentence for many people … They rubbed wounds into their flesh … then they had lost." And Noach Flug added: "When you fell asleep you were thinking, when will I get bread, how will I divide it up, where will I keep it…"

Reports from a parallel world of death, humiliation, but also of comradely help for one another.

The exhibition opens in the German Resistance Memorial Center at 5.30 pm on January 22, 2009. Speakers at the opening ceremony will be Mr Noach Flug, President of the International Auschwitz Committee, Jerusalem, a trainee from Volkswagen Coaching GmbH, and Ms Katrin Göring-Eckardt, Vice President of the German Parliament.

The exhibition marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 1945 and International Holocaust Memorial Day, and is on display in the German Resistance Memorial Center from January 22 to July 12, 2009.
