The pictures in the first row show the mass demonstrations against National Socialism from 1930 to 1933.

The second row shows newspaper photographs taken during raids and searches in the first few weeks after Hitler's rise to power. They made it clear that the National Socialists make no effort to conceal their acts of terror. The intimidation of potential opponents went hand in hand with the willingness of many "normal" citizens to conform.
